DMARC Decision Matrix

The DMARC decision matrix indicates how incoming emails are handled after successful or failed SPF checks and DKIM validations.

Table 1. DMARC decision matrix

SPF check and DKIM validation

DMARC result

Action

SPF pass + DKIM pass

DMARC pass

Deliver

SPF pass + DKIM fail

DMARC fail

Store as spam in quarantine or reject

SPF fail + DKIM pass

DMARC fail

Store as spam in quarantine or reject

SPF fail + DKIM fail

DMARC fail

Store as spam in quarantine or reject

The table shows that the DMARC result is only positive if both the SPF check and the DKIM validation have been passed. If the DMARC result is positive, the email will be delivered. Otherwise, the email will be either stored as spam in quarantine or rejected, depending on the settings in the Email Authentication module in the Control Panel.
